I'm looking at newspaper tagging.. Its not a new idea.. In the 40;s / 50's there was a film where a lady bought a billboard to put her name on it.. fulfilling a dream. This billbaord was purchased with the promise of more billboards .. the dream got larger and larger and the lady became a celebrity. I wish I could remember the name of the film........................ Gavin Turk did a similar thing with his work "Cave" 1995 http://www.whitecube.com/artists/turk/ What I really want to do here, rather than just putting my name in a few newspapers, is explore what it means to do this. What is the impact on a person's life? For a long time I have been interested in graffiti...... - to tag something, is to put your name on it.. some artists do this as though their name was a place holder, something saying: 'this is mine and I intend to do work here later.. I intend to do work which will be reported in national newspapers later.. One of the strange things I have noticed is more and more the tag name .. ie Banksy, DaggerMouth, UIYO is the name people remember.. the real names of these artists becomes the secret name. I'm going against this a little.. I know with UIYO it seems UIYO is the official name of my projects. Philip Bradley being a name left behind. It may be vanity.. it may be that in the newspaper I am already planning on using UIYO Labs, but I'm fairly jazzed about anouncing that I am an artist to a lot of people. It's upside down :) Yes, I know.. This is done in order to jar.. if it was upright it wouldn't have as much of an impact.. Im thinking about putting it in different colours as well ... The work is meant to say.. I exist..I think it fulfills one "role of the artist" Making me immortal..I may not last forever.. but the influence I have/ the changes I make might do.
